How can i teach myself how to do a waltz jump (figure skating)?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009 and filed under waltz | 1 Comment »

I am getting back into iceskating and i want to learn a waltz jump without lessons. i have a friend who can easily teach me but i wanted to do it independantly. can someone please tell me easy steps for me to teach myself? I posted a similair question last night but only one person answered, so please answer if you know how to. it would really help me. thank you.

Hi, Stina.

I am a figure skating coach and former competitive skater.

Unfortunately, you can’t teach yourself how to jump or any other figure skater element. Bad habits are hard to break which can involve the take off, position in the air and proper landing with arm & leg position. It is not a good idea to each yourself skating in any form or manner. Just like you can’t teach yourself to play the piano…..skating requires a coach. It is also not a good idea for your friend to show you how to skate.

Can you successfully execute forward & backward crossovers, inside/outside 3 turns and mohawks? If not, you should not be working on a waltz jump at this stage of the game. The majority of jumps require some type of turn or crossover going into them.

USFSA requires a skater in a competition to have a coach. All competition entry forms require a coach’s signature attesting that you are qualified to compete at that level.

I don’t know what level you are at in either ISI or USFSA or your age. However, I suggest you take classes or invest in a good coach.

Personally, I will take a student for a minimum of 15 minutes. Check with your local skating rink and ask for a range of fees that the various coaches charge. Fees vary by the area of the country. In my area (DFW), 30 minutes lessons can be from $25-50. The fees vary according to coach’s experience and skater’s competitive history. Do some research and ask the coaches for their bio…..don’t just take from a coach who is less expensive. You get what you pay for.

Hope this helps.

What is the best way to learn a foreign language?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009 and filed under learn | 3 Comments »

i would like to learn german but i would to know what is the best way to learn this language ? can anyone give me some tips or advice on how to learn another language ?

Be very careful of the learning method you use. Linguists, and people with vast experience in learning languages will almost always agree on the fact that most language learning methods out there are 50-70 percent fluff! It’s pretty easy to get away with telling you that you’ll be able to speak a language when for example, someone says "hello", they’re speaking English, and it doesn’t mean they can actually communicate. Being semi-fluent means you have a functional comprehension of at least 65% in the conventional range of that language, while fluent would be anything greater than 80%. If you don’t have the time to learn German properly, and you’re after something quick and easy, then you’re probably headed towards disappointment. The best method to getting as far as you can get in the shortest period of time is called the “3 step”. The first step is to complete a FULL Pimsleur (MUST BE PIMSLEUR) course. Listen to each lesson at least 2 times, taking notes the first time with new vocabulary and studying before listening the second time. The 2nd step is to form a list of the 2,000 most common/frequently used words/vocabulary in English, to also include the most common/frequently used eight parts of speech in English (verbs, nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections), which you can search the web for. Once you’ve formed the list, you need to find accurate generic-translations, which you can apply to most common case scenarios of German (definatley the most challenging part of all this). Once that’s done, make flash cards or whichever method works best for you in memorizing vocabulary, but try to include each word in a sentence, on top of just the new word and it’s meaning (basically, know how to use it as correctly as possible). In your sentence forming exercises try to use each word in 10 or more ways, and you’ll actually notice yourself incrementally advancing every 500 words. Repetition is the key here, so this would also be a good time to solidify your pronunciation. After you’ve memorized all that, the 3rd step is to locate 4 movies that are preferably some kind of Disney movie, or anything of a slower pace. Childrens movies seem to work best for this. Watch ONLY these same 4 movies in German, with good, quality English subtitles, continuously, to the point where you know what’s going to be said next. If you need a bit of assistance with the movies or sentence forming exercises, this is where you can use whatever you want to help yourself out (dictionary, phrasebooks, Rosetta Stone, internet, etc). Try to plan completing each step in this order, exactly as described within a time-frame of about 10-12 months. When you’re done, you should be somewhere in the range of “semi-fluency”, at the point where learning after the “3 step” is quick and easy, and being close to fluent after 2 years of using it everyday, and learning at least an additional 100 new vocabulary words a month during that time. The downside to the 3-step method, is that when you’re finished, you still may not be grammatically up to par, but will know more than enough to get there easily, which is what makes this the best and most efficient “fast” method, but not necessarily a good substitute for formal education. Either way, it can’t hurt to try! Good luck!

Where can I get cheap custom made costumes in ontario?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009 and filed under costumes | 1 Comment »

Me and my friends are making a VERY low budget movie. Meaning that $600 for the entire Special FX for it was a major purchase. Is there somewhere we can get cheap custom made costumes near Toronto, Ontario? Things like roman armor, and futuristic stuff, but not many of them. Just, for example, 20 costumes, but all different.

do they need to be custom-made? you could check out some of the regular costume / Halloween stores. i saw some good ones on Yonge St near Bloor (kinda near the Panasonic Theatre).

What is the difference between street jazz and hip hop?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009 and filed under street | 1 Comment »

I want to take Jazz dance classes, but the centre I am at doesn’t offer that. Instead, it has 2 more popular classes: street jazz and hiphop. Aren’t those two the same?

street jazz is going to be mostly jazz danced to hip-hop music. go with that one. hip-hop is much different. it has a totally different attitude.

Can I just wear my running shoes instead of volleyball shoes?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009 and filed under shoes | 4 Comments »

I have really lightweight Asics running shoes. Can I wear them instead of volleyball shoes? What are the significance of the soles on volleyball shoes?

you can do that as long as the soles dont leave black marks on the court.
well i guess the thing about volleyball shoes is that it has a good grip so you wont slide on the courts. thats not good because for example if you jump, and slide when you land you can get hurt. but anyways the sliding thing is just not good. another significance about the soles is that it is super shock absorbent.
well anyways you can definitely wear your regular ones, but if you plan on playing for a while (club, school, etc) it would be a good idea to get volleyball shoes

I am not exactly average wait so this year i am making my own costume. My best friends are being minnie mouse and a bubble bee. I really want to mach them with a super cute costume that is easy to make! So plz help me!

Hey there. I am not sure what you mean by "not average weight" but these important thing is to find a costume you will be comfortable wearing. I am a big fan of buying costumes as opposed to making them because of the time involved and how hard it it to get it right sometimes!

How do I find a music publisher who deals in music for film in scotland?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009 and filed under music | 1 Comment »

I am looking for a music publisher specialising in publishing music for film and also film and production companies who may be looking for musicians to write music for their films. Can anyone offer any advice on how to go about this? Thanks.

The only thing I know that may come even remotely close to what you’re asking is www.extrememusic.com. Check their website for more details and if that’s even what you need. Good luck.
