Whats the difference between cosplay and costume?

I know cosplay is like dressing up as a character from books, shows, movies, etc. But, couldn’t costume be the same as cosplay? Or are they completely different? And how so?

And sorry if this is in the wrong category, I didn’t know which one to put it in!

Cosplay:
It is a word that has it’s root in costume play. It is both a noun and a verb. Cosplay can mean the actual costume, as well as the action of wearing it
Contrary to popular belief, many cosplayers (well over 98%) do not believe they are the characters they are "cosplaying" as. Cosplays are typically worn to anime conventions.
Its a hobby, many cosplayers take pride in the fact that they can take a 2D character and turn it into a 3D character that they themselves can act as. Making the actually cosplay costume is a big factor too instead of just buying a Halloween costume from a store.
People would say its a way to show off your sewing skills.

I would say Cosplaying is a sub category of of costume with a lot more meaning.
Wearing a costume can be Halloween or just dressing in general.

  1. Wearing a costume and cosplaying are the same thing. Cosplay just means you act as a specific character that represents your costume. Example: You can wear a Squall (from FF8) costume and act like some one else, however, if you act like Squall (from FF8) and you accurately acclaim who your character is, then you are not only wearing a Squall costume but you are also cosplaying as Squall. (AKA, ‘cos’tume playing.)
