What’s the difference between costume and clothing?

I know that costume is like dressing up as a character for shows, movies, etc. But, couldn’t clothing be the same as costume? Or are they completely different? Thank you.

  1. i think that they are different. costume is funky and clothing is more normal and conservitive. costume is like a tutu.

  2. It all depends on the use of the clothing. Someone might wear a cape as a costume piece, but there are also people who would include a cape in their everyday wardrobe.

Another way to look at it is, costume is not always clothing. A costume could be painted body artwork that involves no clothing at all.
