I want to learn how to play the sax but I have no music background, where should I start?

When I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the sax but I never had the time or money back then. Now that I do have time and money, I’m thinking of studying how to play the sax at my home. But the thing is I have absolutely no music background, I don’t even know how to read notes.

Is there any website that could help me start learning? Also, is it possible to learn how to play the sax by home-study given my predicament?

The best thing to do is to start taking lessons. You’ll be a lot better off doing that considering you have no musical backround.

I’d recommend getting a private instructor rather than trying to self teach. Self teaching doesn’t give you the kind of work ethic, nor having somebody correct you if your making a mistake. The worst thing to do is to develop bad playing habits.

  3. I’d say save your pennies and buy the best instrument you can afford. Get an instruction book and read it and read it and read it. And also find yourself a nice field somewhere out of earshot of the neighbors and practise, practise, practise, practise, practise.
You can sign up for lessons too.

  5. You should probably take a Music class somewhere in your community. I play sax-and that’s not the hard part. The difficult thing would be that you don’t read music. You can ask a friend to teach you-but your best bet would be lessons. They’re worth it, because you don’t really forget. I’ve been reading music since the age of 5, and it’s still with me. As for the sax, just get a fingering chart once you know the notes. Or as for help from your instructor. Once you get good go to MusicNotes.com for your music. Sax really isn’t hard at all. Good luck!

  6. I think the best choice is to first off, make sure you get a quality instrument, because, I’ve had a bad one before and its awful. Next, you should try to get lessons from a professional and while taking lessons, you should get some instruction books for beginners so you can practice on your own time. Just remember to take it slow and don’t expect to be a pro really quick. If you find a good instructor and good beginner books, you should be able to learn how to play. That’s what I had when I started out in school, and private lessons would probably make it easier.
