Mapmaking for the Dance Theater Dreamer with Erika Chong Shuch

February 5 - February 10, 2007

Erika Chong ShuchMapmaking for the Dance Theater Dreamer: An exploration of the things in the world that inspire performance imagery, and some tools for bringing them to life.

This workshop will focus on translating the imagery based on impressions of the world into Dance Theater structures. We will approach the development of work from the perspective of explorers, mining familiar terrain for moments of theatrical impulse. We will develop movement, text, and musical sketches that can serve as maps of our explorations, magnifying the realizations and questions of our journeys. We will examine ways to build individual performance vocabularies that amplify the inherent strengths and instincts of each performer.

Erika Chong Shuch is the artistic director of the ESP Project, a resident dance theater company at Intersection for the Arts. Erika is a recipient of the Gerbode Foundation's prestigious Emerging Choreographers Award, has worked under the mentorship of dance theater maverick, Joe Goode through CHIME, a mentorship program of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company. Erika received a SF Bay Guardian's Goldie award in dance and her work has been nominated for 2 IZZIE Awards. Her work has been supported by residencies at ODC Theater and Counterpulse/ 848. She is currently an artist-in-residence at Headlands Center for the Arts and will be a 2007 Djerassi Artist in Residence.
