Participatory Performance Work with Karl Frost

January 16 - January 18, 2007

Karl FrostA participatory performance is an event where the audience member takes on a more active role in the ritual of performance, yet whose experience is still seen as the primary focal point for the event. The performer, while acting in collaboration with the active audience member, is still concerned with the flow and shaping of the internal experience of the audience.

We will examine how the overt action of words, movement, sound and visual composition affect and channel the opportunities for audience action and experience. As well as being seen as an art form in its own right, participatory performance will be used to help investigate the communication process of proscenium performance and its inherent experiential participation. Some of the time will be spent investigating Karl's previous works (Cards, Axolotl, etc) and the rest spent researching a new work around the theme of "touch", to be performed at the end of the lab. These works will then serve as a conversation point for discussing general issues of interactive performance.

Karl Frost has been practicing and performing contact improvisation and interdisciplinary, dance-based performance since the mid 80's.  His physical work is influenced by release technique, his study of martial arts, and an intimate knowledge of physics.  Known internationally for his dynamic movement style and for the edge-pushing nature of his work, both in process and performance, his performances take the felt experience as their reference points. His work has been showcased over the last 2 decades across 5 continents.
