How do you do a waltz jump (ice skating) properly?
I’ve been skating for only a year:) haha but then I can’t really get the waltz jump that right>
Do you dance? It is basically a tour-jete on ice.
I had trouble understanding until my coach told me to imagine that I am jumping over a fence. Pick a line on the ice, and envision a fence about a foot high. You need to swing your front foot up to get it over first, and then when you land on your jumping foot, you need to swing the other one up behind you to clear the fence with your second leg. Bend your knees very deeply before you take off, and when you land- this gives you lift and will save your knees when you land.
Try this both off ice, and on. Find some videos on You Tube of a tour-jete as well, so you can see how a dancer performs this move, and then take it onto the ice with you.
Good luck- your waltz jump will lead to all the other jumps, so don’t be afraid to spend a lot of time mastering it.

Its basically a 3-turn in the air. if there are hockey lines on your ice then go to the goal thing at that little curvy line that looks likee.. http://www.mohasummerhockey.net/userMedia/Image/hockey-goalie-424.jpg (the red line) and skate on it and bring your leg back and kick it forward and jump in the air and then land on the leg that you kicked with. its kind of hard to explain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNuVqIwwbuU watch that :]

For the waltz jump, 3 things are important.
1. Let the ice turn you. This means that you wait with jumping until the last possible moment, to the moment where the ice is starting to force you to make a 3-turn, where the ice is starting to flip your blade for you. So just let the edge come, don’t rush it. If you rush and jump before you’re at the end of the edge, you’ll lose your balance. The moment you take off is just a fraction of a second before the ice flips your blade from forward to backward.
2. Kick through. The knee of the kicking leg goes up into the air, the foot of the kicking leg kicks through, the ankle of the kicking leg has to go PAST the knee of that leg. MANY people do this wrongly, make a video of yourself or ask somebody to watch. Many people will kick their knee up, but it will be so bend that their foot never leaves from underneath their butt. This is wrong. Your foot has to kick through and up.
3. Roll off your toepicks. Don’t worry you won’t fall, because you’ll jump before you fall. As the edge is approaching its end, the point where it will start to flip your blade, you quickly roll up off the blade and onto your toepicks as you leave the ice.
As you roll up on your toepicks, your kicking leg has just passed the foot on the ice and is going up and forward. Correct timing takes practice.
Also, use your arms to help you get off the ice. As you’re gliding on your back edge and stepping onto the final, front edge, your arms are down and a little bit back. As you kick through, your arms go up to about shoulder level, stretched out in front of you. This gives you a little extra lift. Then as you land, your arms go into the landing position to help you check the edge on the landing.
